There hasn’t been a movie quite like “Uncut Gems” in a very long time. Once in a while, something comes along that reminds me why I love film even with all the sequel and remake polluted waters that leak all over the box office. It goes to show how incredible cinema is in 2019. Toy Story 4 is no longer in my top 10 for god’s sake!
Let’s get right to the point. “Uncut Gems” is a masterpiece. There’s no other way to put it. The script has shreds of “The Godfather” scattered all throughout the words as the story deals with the horrors of sports betting and greed while also shining a huge spotlight on the love for surviving in a turbulent world. There’s lots of awful deeds carried out in this. There are moments of redemption and moments of loss that keep you going on a big roller coaster of emotions as the plot deals with not just the cons of gambling addictions, but why one could get addicted in the first place.
It’s filled with the most bizarre and awful characters played by a fully golden ensemble that not just includes Adam Sandler’s best performance ever, but also from newbies like Julie Foxx, broadway stars like Idina Menzel, and even sports stars like Kevin Garnett.
If that all weren’t enough, it’s filled with such originality that makes my heart fill with such a rush. The directing and cinematography is truly stellar and along with the great improv all the actors play off each other, the final product turns into something people will talk about for years and will stand out in color as much as the giant costly rock that is the entire core of the plot.
It’s one thing to make a great movie, but it’s another to make something that not only is original in words, but original in craft. I can’t recommend this movie enough. My prediction is it probably won’t get the recognition it deserves at awards season. It falls into a category where it’s filled with so much out of the ordinary that people either won’t see it or just upright hate it. But films like Whiplash, La La Land, and Logan are the ones we remember the most and are the ones that dare cross the line of reality to make us think and appreciate why certain art sparkles. There’s a reason for that, and you’ll have to look closely into the gem yourself to find out.
