Sofia Coppola has been flying by in her simplistic yet gorgeous films but her presence in the entertainment media has been very much under the radar. One would think that “On The Rocks” is her comeback film after “Lost In Translation” now 17 years old. She has been making waves in Hollywood for the past decade or two, and while one can argue she’s never really gone away, I can easily say that this new movie of hers is hands down her best yet.

“On the Rocks” brings Sofia back together with the wonderful Bill Murray, who is the all powerful shining star in this funny romantic drama. It’s easy to tell how well they work together as there are quite a few moments where you can’t tell if Bill is improving, or just being such a terrific actor. This character was written for his kind of personality and when you pair him with a terrific performance by Rashida Jones, you’re bound to get something special.

This film has a lot of heart for what is kind of a sad plot that follows a woman investigating with her father if someone is having an affair. But I think that’s what made me love it so much. It’s a simplistic story, yet very unexpected because by the end, you’re a bit shocked to see where it all ends. The cinematography reflects that gloomy yet artistic tone kind of like “Lost In Translation”, but it’s also easier to understand and enjoy since the writing takes something so basic and turns it into a gripping yet enjoyable experience that keeps your eyes glued to your Apple+ screen. There’s so many moments of pure joy created by Bill Murray fine wine acting moments by Rashida Jones that create a perfect balance to this specific genre that may be frowned upon by some (romantic). I give full credit to Coppola on that. When given the power to craft her own story, she emulates magic as powerful as Damien Chazelle or even her own father.

“On the Rocks” is another fine addition to your COVID lockdown watchlist, and perfect for any kind of couple or family outing whether you're truly brave enough to go out to a theater or hunkered down enough to spend $5 on Apple+. Let’s hope this leads to more special projects for Sofia because it’s about damn time she deserves more of a spotlight.
