"Knives Out" Review - The Mystery of Swift Execution

There always was a mystery behind the talent of Rian Johnson. Obviously, Looper was a knock out, and as much as The Last Jedi was not the best Star Wars movie, I’m part of the rare minority that enjoyed it more than others. There are scenes in that film that are shot and crafted with such perfection that the prequels never had. The majority of cinephiles seemed to have a different opinion which is okay. Some cinephiles might hate murder mysteries, and I can accept that. But it sure will be hard to hate this one.

“Knives Out” is one hell of a thrill ride, which is I think exactly what Rian is going for. He said in the interview its more than a roller coaster than a crossword puzzle, which is I think exactly the way it should’ve been. This is not your ordinary old timey detective show or Clue or Murder on The Orient Express. This is something only a true filmmaker could make, and only with an ensemble as passionate and giddy as this one. I mean, forget Marvel. I’m still amazed how this all was kept under wraps so well. The trailers make it seem like you’re in for a “whodunnit.” But make no mistake, this is not an ordinary mystery.

Elevated by a strong masterful screenplay and an ensemble of big timers like Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more, this movie not only keeps you on your toes, but keeps you fully entertained through every minute of this two hour picture. The mystery portion takes a back seat many times throughout the story as it makes room for some scenes that’ll make you emotional, thrilled, startled, and exhilarated. It’s exactly what this kind of genre should be, and I’m still puzzled at how this kind of idea was crafted so delicately let alone with beautiful music and cinematography to lead the way.

It’s probably one of the most perfect films I’ve seen this year in terms of sheer enjoyment. You’ll laugh, you’ll feel like Sherlock Holmes, and you will be taken in for one crazy adventure. Just don’t let Daniel Craig’s bad American/British hybrid accent distract you too much.
