If there’s any more proof that Netflix is the major leader in Oscar raging movies, look no further to the past, present, and future. The first being Roma, the third being the Irishman, and right in the middle is Dolemite Is My Name.
This labor of love made by and staring Eddie Murphy finally puts one of the best comedians ever back into his roots. It tells a crazy Hollywood story about how a random rapping comedian in the 70s created a persona and ended up becoming a hit musician, a hit Hollywood movie star, and later “The Godfather of rap”. It echoes similar themes to “The Disaster Artist” telling how even the the dumbest of ideas can become popular with a bit of effort; but the movie still manages to feel fully original with fantastic beautiful cinematography to take you back to the 70s, kick ass soulful music, a hilarious, yet heartfelt script, and a cast of unknowns and well knowns that really drive the plot home.
As I said, it puts Eddie Murphy back into what he was born to do. Not just comedy, but his raw acting skills. He joins a long line of comedians that have unreal acting skills like Robin Williams and soon Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. You can tell this was made with so much love and affection to honor the true hero behind the story, Rudy Ray Moore. Because of that, not only is it a great piece of work for the African American community to enjoy, but it’s crafted so that there’s something everyone can laugh or connect to. Every year, there’s complaints at the Oscars of who’s not represented, and I always say there needs to be more films that showcase that representation. This right here is Oscar material that people want, and it’s right in front of the academy. Let’s hope the Netflix label doesn’t blind those folks too harshly.
