"The Lighthouse" Review- Stormy At The Cinema

If you’re looking for something to freak you out in the most mysterious ways, look no further to “The Lighthouse”; one of the most bizarre psychological horror films in all of existence.

This wild dream of a craft combines brilliant black and white symbolism and cinematography with the horrors of extended confinement and puts it all into one daring screenplay that keeps you guessing, laughing, and jaw-dropping the entire two hour run. I don’t even know what else is there to say except that this is a film that simply must be seen. It probably won’t be for everyone. After all, it’s filled with drunken dances, long sequences that take their precious time to sink into your brain, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but fart jokes. But it does what a psychological horror is supposed to do, and that is thrill you and scare you. And it does so with no jump scares at all, which in return goes to echo movies like The Shining and Psycho.

The craziest part is that it only has two actors; Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe. To put it bluntly, they both better get Oscars. For Willem, it’s overdue. He’s been putting out terrific performances for ages and frankly just needs one already, especially after his crazed performance in this. For Robert, it’s simply because he deserves. Not that Willem deserves it too, but so many people have probably written him off after the Twilight movies. But he has come a long way to prove to the world that he’s no bullshit actor. He kicks Joaquin’s ass in acting by a mile. If Leonardo DiCaprio can get an Oscar for what he had to go through in The Revenant, then Robert Pattinson deserves 10 of them for his twisted performance and the hell he probably went through. I don’t think any other acting duo could do what these two did. If this film will be remember and studied on for anything, it will be the acting alone.

There’s nothing else I can really talk about as “The Lighthouse” is best to be seen with an open mind very little knowledge of the plot itself. This film is what drives filmmakers like me to the cinema. This cinematic work will probably be the one pushed aside when it comes to Academy Awards, and when that day comes, I will truly be disappointed.

Two Nebs Up!
