In a very slow Summer, we haven’t had a lot of original movies released yet. But buried in The Lion Kings and Spider Mans, movies like The Farewell and Midsomnar have been getting more and more steam. Then you have films like “The Peanut Butter Falcon”, which fall into a truly different spectacular category.
This movie is a true delight from beginning to end. Not only is it original, but it’s also not based on a true story. It surely could be though. After all, the actor who plays the young boy with Down syndrome has the disability itself. You could say that his disability does help, but I also believe there’s more to acting then just being yourself, and he takes his warm, funny, relatable personality beyond worlds with his terrific acting. The chemistry he brings with actual cannibal, Shia Labeouf, is a bond not seen in movies too often. It’s funny, sad, moving, and smooth as a ballet dance. Together, Shia and Zack Gottsagen tell this Mark Twain-esque story in a brand new light that not only highlights the joys of following your dreams and the beauty of a good friendship, but how the most unexpected people can come from the most unexpected places and change your life. All of this is accompanied by a a hell of a screenplay and colorful yet gloomy cinematography to heighten the various moods.
If that weren’t enough, this also is a movie that gives disabled people a voice. We talk a lot about race and gender representation, which I have nothing against. Films like “The Farewell” are needed and I welcome more and more every day, especially if they are original. But disability representation doesn’t get noticed enough, and the fact that they were able to create such an inspiring movie all revolving around an actual human being with Down Syndrome is so magnificent to me.
I hope to see more of this in the future, hopefully in 2019. Because in this toxic world we live in, we all could use some peanut butter falcons to give us some lighthearted fun.
