It’s nice to get away to the movies, but it also is exhausting to see the same kind of films over and over again. You can only get superheroes, remakes, sequels, prequels, or movies based on pop culture characters. That’s where Danny Boyle enters the room; one of the true visionary directors out there who can take a rags to riches tale, a story about a guy being stuck in a rock, and a biopic about Steve Jobs, and turn them into something unique, well directed, memorable, and full of love and enjoyment. Now comes his next movie that tackles the premise, “What would life be like without The Beatles?” Well, you could easily overthink it like I first did, and say that music probably wouldn’t be nearly as evolved as it is today. After all, The Beatles have inspired billions of inspiring musicians and overall people including me. Or you could simply go along for the ride and see what happens. I mean, most of you accepted those stupid time travel rules in Avengers: Endgame; I’m sure giving this film a chance will be easy for you.
“Yesterday” is exactly what you expect. It has a few plot holes or things left unexplained, an enjoyable soundtrack, lots of great comedy, and a talented as hell musician/actor who brings the British boy band back to life in a new form. I have begged for something even remotely fresh and new, and we finally got it in “Yesterday”. What you don’t know is how heartwarming and heartbreaking it can be at the same time. It has tones that mirror The Graduate, The Greatest Showman, and Slumdog Millionaire all into one, and the blend of these tones with everything I just mentioned produces something that is unbelievably fun, colorful, and rewatchable. I truly loved every second of it.
This film is one hell of a bubbly experience that simply must be seen by Beatles fans and musicians alike. It will surprise you in many ways, as Danny Boyle’s movies usually do. Go support ideas like this, because I guarantee you they are better than you might believe. If the love you take is equal to the love you make, then Boyle sure put in a hell lot of love that we all really need right now.
