"How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" Review - Dimming the Fire

I had to look up what other trilogies have been done in cinema history that have had three perfect films. I could only find one; Lord Of the Rings. Sure, you could say Star Wars or Toy Story, but those two trilogies are still having movies being made. Not even Spider Man Or The Godfather had three perfectly crafted films. But How To Train Your Dragon did it. This series of films concluded in the best way possible.

I would say “The Hidden World” is the weakest of the three, but it’s honestly only because the previous two installments are just that good. The last chapter of “How To Train Your Dragon” takes on a different kind of slower burn story while still having the breathtaking animation, soaring John Powell music, high flying adventure, and smart goofball comedy (voiced by one of my favorite voice ensembles ever) that makes this tale of creatures stand out amongst the rest of the animated films out there. Hidden World is written as a fully fleshed separate movie while still acting as a bittersweet conclusion to the series as it focuses on Toothless instead of the other lovable viking characters. In doing so, the script shares themes of love, growing up and the effect loss can have on a human spirit. Kind of deep for a story whose’s main character is named Hiccup right? Just goes to show how masterful director Dean DeBlois is on going for the heartstrings while not sacrificing any magic with it.

It’s truly hard to say goodbye to such a perfect band of characters and monsters; but I’m so happy with what came out of it. Sure, this will be rebooted at some point, and I’m going to despise the reboot so much. But the brilliance and wonder of this trilogy will not be forgotten. Its three tales about a G-Rated Game of Thrones like world will be seen by many generations and beyond and will always be remembered as a piece of animated cinema that wasn’t afraid to go all in to make this magical world of animation more than special. It's honestly storytelling at it's finest and something we as 2019 moviegoers don’t deserve. The night fury may go dark, but it will for sure always be seen.

Two Nebs Up!
