I think we can all agree that “The LEGO Movie” was the biggest surprise of 2014. Lord and Miller took a product that had been done in movies way too many times to count and created a masterpiece of animation that would ultimately lead to one of the biggest snubs in Oscar history the following year. It was beautiful, imaginative, and just the most perfectly hilarious movie. 2019 comes around, and now we have a sequel. This bares the question, where could the sequel go, and could it even be done? After all, the curtain came off of the big climax in the first film. We now know about the real life world and that the animated spectacle is just all in the imagination. That big reveal lingers in the sequel, on top of the high expectations many fans were having. In the end, that’s what I was most nervous about with “The LEGO Movie 2”.
That being said, for the most part, this next installment in the LEGO cinematic universe was superb. You all can probably tell by now it’s not as good as the first, but don’t let that drag you away from seeing this. Topping the 2014 hit was going to be hard in the first place. But the brilliant slapstick comedy, the gorgeous and smooth animation, and the out of the box voice acting is still there in full force. Plus, this movie does take you to new places, as it adds a female imagination to the mix with the addition of a real world sister. There’s some cute musical numbers, an epic Emmett clone character, a kiddish, yet clever evil henchman group, and well crafted superpowers and settings only a LEGO movie can get away with. Plus, the meta humor just stands out like the sun as usual. Unikitty as a giant Mad Max like monster? What more could you ask for!
The story is the only thing that’s a bit weaker, as it’s less adventurous and more of a Guardians 2 kind of feel where we focus on a lot more storylines. That ultimately drags the film just a bit, but only very little to the point where it feels annoying. Maybe it’s just me drawing straws, but like I said, now that the whole mystery of the existence of the LEGO universe is out of the bag, there’s a little less magic that is associated with it. It doesn’t have the surprise and punches that the predecessor brought before it, but you will for sure still have a good time.
At the end of the day, everything is still awesome about this beautiful world, and it’s looking hopeful that things will stay awesome with this universe for a while.
