"Vice" Review - The Bizarre World of DC

Christmas has come again, and so is my annual Christmas Day movie.

This time, I chose to go with my family and see “Vice”. It’s an extremely interesting biopic, one that is hard to talk about publicly in these overly sensitive times. It’s hard to tell what is truth and not truth in this picture about the merciless Vice President, Dick Cheney, but it’s got a lot of wild directing, which is what Adam McCay is really well known for.

Unfortunately, I think his directing got too wild on this one. It tells the story well and leaves no character’s story unturned, but it suffers from inconsistency, whether it’s the fast paced or slow paced editing, going back and forth between timelines, or using real footage vs. actor’s footage. Thankfully, it sticks more with telling the story behind the Bush presidency, even though it suffers from being a bit too political at some points. If you stay for the mid credits and think about what you’ve just seen, let’s just say you’ll notice that mid credits scene makes no sense at all.

While “Vice” may be very wild at its core, the performances are truly unbelievable. Amy Adams and especially Christian Bale transform themselves into some unbelievable figures, and if it weren’t for Rami Malek and Olivia Colman, then they would be Oscar winners without any question. In fact, all the performances are huge standouts, which helps make this movie feel so much more real despite the strange director decisions.

“Vice” is exactly what the name leads you to believe; it’s the silver medal. It’s worth a watch, just to see the history behind one of the most brilliantly evil puppet masters ever in a much bigger light.

One Nebs Up!
