“The Favourite” is one you probably have heard of. And yes, it is as bizarre as what you see in the TV spots, but take it from me; it’s really great. It’s not perfect, but it’s super well done.
It’s directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who directed such underground hits like The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer. His name has been floating around the film world for a while, but this is the first big commercial film of his. This is the first of his films I have seen, and I gotta say he’s a little like Wes Anderson mixed in with David O Russell. Other than the dumb 360 camera shots he uses, the cinematography and colors are just gorgeous and perfect. It adds perfectly to a script that has some oddly satisfying and funny one liners while also containing a well written story and memorable dialogue.
Like I said, it takes many odd steps most of the time, but the performances by Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz are jaw-dropping and memorable straight to the heart. Emma Stone also adds to the entertainment with her brilliant performance as well. I prey to god that they all get Oscar Nods (and Colman wins one) because this trio of fine women make the movie worthwhile. Period. I don’t know if I’d like this movie as much If it weren’t for those three.
It’s going to get lots of awards buzz, and rightfully so. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you’ll leave remembering it and hopefully liking it. If anything else, you’ll remember the last shot of the film, which believe me, I think we’ll be enough.
