"Green Book" Review - The Nebs Color Glows Bright

“Green Book” ended up being at least for me one of the biggest surprise hits of this year. When I found out it topped the Toronto Film Festival and got the Audience Award, beating out movies like Roma, If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star Is Born, I was puzzled and wondering why for the longest time.

On the surface, it looks like a silly cute friendship movie. But that’s just the surface. And when you clear the dust and go see it, you will then see some of the inner beauty this movie has.

I haven’t seen such a heartwarming friendship film since “Planes Trains and Automobiles”. This movie perfectly develops the relationship between two men in two different worlds, and lets Oscar bait topics like racism and rich lifestyles take more of the backseat. It takes on racism in such a wonderful way almost like how Cabaret tackled the Holocaust. You see it happening, but the real story is how the friendship of two men become so heartwarming and memorable. Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen are just trailblazers and I hope they both get at least an Oscar nod.

It does very well shot and the settings are beautiful as well, but with a movie like this, the little things don’t matter. This movie was hell bent on making you smile and tear up a little, and for that, it gets a true A+. I could rewatch this again, which is very rare for a moviegoer like me, but with a script that is THAT amazing and with 2 actors that are perfect for each other, it’s very hard to turn away from.

Two Nebs Up!
