This piece of terrific filmmaking probably won’t be seen by a lot of people in the 36 states that still allow conversion therapy. Some in part because of how divided this country is, but also in part that this film has barely gotten any buzz for the few weeks it’s been out. It’s really such a shame.
“Boy Erased” is a brilliant look into the horrors of this disgusting practice and the suffering people go through because of overly religious families. It has a good load of beautiful cinematography, a haunting as hell score, and a script that takes its time, yet wastes no time on the development of such important characters. Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are mesmerizing as the parents along with all the other beautiful (inside and out) actors that are showcased. When all is said and done though, Lucas Hedges puts on once again, a phenomenal performance that is devastating yet addicting to watch. I hope the vote isn’t split when they are voting on him for best actor at the Oscars, because this is his 2nd of 3rd Oscar buzzing film he’s in. That’s how good this 21 year old is becoming, and I am so excited to see what comes next for him.
This film is a true tearjerker as well as a brilliant piece of cinema that I hope gains more traction as the awards season approaches. Everyone needs to see this movie whether you need to or not. It comes at a great time, even though it’s only a few years too late.
