Well it’s not “The Old Man and the Gun”, but my god do we have a great piece of work on our hands, both the main figure of the movie, and the movie itself’ “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is an incredible movie that tells the wild story of how a once famous author was able to forge hundreds of letters from famous writers and make a ton of money from it without being caught for the longest time.

Directed by the brilliant and future Mr. Rogers director, Marielle Heller, this movie does a fantastic job with shining a light on it’s main plot through a wonderful script, colorful and perfectly clear cinematography, and a haunting score that I think more people will remember than you might realize. Besides the “forging letters” part of the story, what I love about the writing is that all the characters are gay in this movie, but it’s not made a big deal about it at all. There are problems in this film that we, hopefully smart moviegoers, know too well considering how awful gay people were treated in the 90s, but the movie trusts that you know that and doesn’t make a big deal adding too much drama just to win Oscar bonus points. This little detail is just one of the many reasons why Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant are guaranteed to garner Oscar nominations this year. I never thought I’d actually say that about Melissa, but here I am. They both give stunning, genuine, funny, heartbreaking performances and their range in how they handle these complicated characters is inspiriting and a thrill to watch.

I hope this movie gets more buzz than it’s getting right now, because there’s so many great biopics this year, I hope that “Can You Ever” doesn’t get drowned out through all the noise.

Two Nebs Up!
