"Venom" Review - Darkness Falls

Man “Venom” was such an embarrassment. I don’t know how much better it would’ve been without Sony taking a shit all over it (by cutting the runtime by 30 minutes and editing it so it’s not Rated R), but I don’t think it would’ve made that much of a difference.
I will give it one thing only. When it gets to some Venoming, it’s pretty cool. The effects look awesome and the fights for the most part are a cool thing to witness. But the film suffers from a dishonorable screenplay, when it comes to both overall writing and story. The whole plot feels rushed, has many potholes, moments that make no sense at all, and many lines that made me feel like I was watching “The Room”. This whole movie was written around badass fights and literally nothing else, so it just feels like a rom com most of the time or a 2 hour dragged out soap opera. I really hate to say this, but the Eddie Brock in Spider Man 3 had a better script and character development to work with than this movie. And when you manage to have your movie be worse than Spider Man 3, that’s truly an achievement.
Tom Hardy does bring it though as he usually does, as well as the other actors, like Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed. But the problem is these actors are too good to act off such a bad script. I felt like I was watching the Star Wars prequels again from watching all of these talented as hell actors work off with something that’s literally “a turd in the wind”.
“Venom” is for people who just want to see some action. It’s for people who like “Skyscraper”, “Rampage”, “Godzilla”, and Skull Island.” I don’t envy those kinds of moviegoers though. If you enjoy it that much, go enjoy it. More benefits to you. But this is 2018. Superhero movies have to be better than this, maybe not “Dark Knight” good, but at least “The First Avenger” good.
