“Sorry To Bother You” is one part bizare comedy and metaphors, and two parts a really well made and hilarious story diving into the classic battle of high vs. low class. It’s got a really well rounded cast that includes Lakeith Stanfeld, Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, and more that do everything from comedy gold voices to overall terrific acting. This cast is also blessed with a wonderful original screenplay by director Boots Riley.
This film started off being one of those super weirdly directed indie flicks, which turned me off a good amount. Don’t get me wrong, there are some ways this story is told that I enjoy a lot, but some, like the earrings and the trashing of a person through viral videos or literal trash was just too on the nose for me. But slowly, it turned into something anyone can really relate to and appreciate, especially if they have some issues with capitalism. It’s a great original idea that was thought through pretty good with a fantastic mainly all black cast; both of which are something I think we are finally starting to see more of. There’s still lots to accomplish, but at least these kind of films are given a chance, even if they have a truly awful ending.
Yeah, I was going to give this two nebs up, but after that ending pissed me off so bad, I have to say no. But a very good directing effort anyway Boots.
