Once in a while, I miss a film that I don’t believe is anything special. Then, after constant praise and peer pressure, you see it and gives you a genuine amount of surprise. “Wonder” is exactly that kind of film.
I went into this movie thinking it was just going to be another cliche “Ugly Duckling” kind of story. But I was very wrong, and frankly, this movie goes far beyond any kind of “ugly duckling” story. It takes you behind the scenes of every background character that is personally affected by Jacob Tremblay’s character, whether good or bad, to create a storybook like world that actually gives a true meaningful feeling and message to the audience. This film’s writing is so well done and everyone’s acting just makes this story soar beyond all proportions. It gives you the balance of the wonders of being a kid, while also highlighting the relatable differences through everyone’s lives and the friends/family that surround them.
In the end, it’s a feel good movie that also has enough originality to stand out on it’s own, and surprisingly, a lot of Star Wars humor. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, but more than anything, you’ll be moved like an earthquake under your feet. Truly a treat and dare I say, wonder, for everyone to see.
