"Call Me By Your Name" Review - Sexy Is The Game

For the 2nd time in my tenure of critiquing movies, I actually left the film early. I know, it’s crazy to say, considering this is a nominee for best picture, but boy was this difficult to sit through.

First, I have to say that this whole film is shot beautifully. The international settings this film uses are just gorgeous and the music is very divine. Plus, the actors are truly wonderful and the chemistry between the main boy and Armie Hammer is pretty strong.

The problem with me for this movie was the amount of graphic sex it had in it. I’m going to warn you right up front, you get what you pay for. This is a film about a boy with a bisexual relationship between many people, and the movie tests your skill in how much sex you can actually take. It’s both uncomfortable and serves no purpose in moving the story along. The plot starts out great, but literally it goes from great character development to just sex, sex, sex. The moment I decided to leave was (SPOILERS AHEAD) when the main kid jacked off into a peach. After all I had seen already, I just had enough. I only had about a half hour left in the movie and I just couldn’t take it anymore.

(PICK UP HERE FOR NON SPOILERS). The movie is so slow because it just Armie Hammer’s (yes, that’s a pun) on numerous sexual scenes and keeps dragging them on for an uncomforable amount of time. And if movies with an inconsistent plot and lots of sex is your thing, then you may like 50 Shades of Grey. SHOTS. FIRED. LOL! Alright, had to make a good burn. It’s not nearly as cringy as 50 Shades of Grey, because it actually has character development and achieves a lot when it comes to film techniques, but you are going into something that’s not conventional to the human eye. It’s basically Moonlight, but if it were all white people and was much more graphic. I’m surprised I like Moonlight more than I did this to be honest.

Overall, a well done film. But it really isn’t one for me. And even if that’s the kind of kinky stuff you like, it’ll still feel a bit odd. Go in with caution.
