"Phantom Thread" Review (100th!) - Got No Strings

“Phantom Thread”…I’m just going to cut to the chase. It’s bad. It's kind of shocking how bad it is considering the guy who made this did “There Will be Blood”, one of the best films of the 21st century.

The cinematography is great, the score is gorgeous, and the acting by Daniel Day Lewis and Vicki Krieps is phenomenal. But the plot is just garbage. Just imagine two people shooting each other in the foot and then having sex on the dinner table. It’s basically that for the entire film. The film starts out with a good relationship between the two characters which completely disappears within the first 30 minutes as it’s literally a movie about two people being assholes to each other while boasting about how they can’t live without them. The character development makes it even more of a mess. DDL’s and Vicki Krieps’ characters have no redeeming qualities or reasons for you to like them so you just hate that they are being such bullies the entire 2 hours. This movie felt like if the Kardashians met Downton Abbey.

It disappoints me so much because the movie looks beautiful, and Daniel Day Lewis gives an incredible final performance of his career, but it’s such a shame the story had to be this bad. I still love Paul Thomas Anderson, but all I can say is better luck next time.

Also, to the audience in my theatre, being a dick to someone is not funny. PLEASE STOP LAUGHING.

One Nebs Down!
