Pixar has another hit. Not just any hit, a “Godfather” ranking hit.
There have been many wonderful Pixar films over the years, Toy Story, Monsters Inc, The Incredibles. But only 6 in my view have achieved a “Godfather” ranking. These are movies that transcend both animation and story in ways that have not been seen before and as a result, become some of the best animated works ever made. These include Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, Toy Story 3, and Inside Out. And now, Coco joins the ranks.
I left the theater today feeling so happy and so moved. “Coco” is a love letter to everything ranging to family, music, and Mexican culture, while also having a crazy unexpected plot that brings more than just a “Wizard of Oz” vibe. The animation is the most stunning and gorgeous animation I have seen in years with the lights, the colors, and the texture of everything from the humans, the objects, and to the way humans strum a guitar. It’s a work of Da-Vinci like art.
This film delivers even more with a stunning Mexican cast that fits each character as if they were created from scratch, and the score by the godly Michael Giacchino as well as the songs by many talented musicians simply take your breath away at every well-fitting moment.
I was very nervous for “Coco” at first. I mean, did we expect any company to get a film about Day of the Dead right in 2017? And why would you put a 22 minute “Frozen” film in front of the movie other than to get butts in the seats? But Disney has proved every one of us all wrong. It’s almost as if they said, “what if we had a reset button on Meet The Robinsons, as well as what if we could make “The Book of Life” significantly better. Well, this is what you get. It’s hard for any company to have 6 groundbreaking masterpieces, even harder in the world of computer animation. But for Pixar, making a masterpiece is just a regular Tuesday. To my favorite company ever, way to seize the moment.
