It’s hard to judge a film like “Last Flag Flying”. I’m still thinking about It even after a few hours. It’s filled with heartbreak, love, friendship, yet humor that will fill you with tears.

But I can easily say I truly loved it. This film is not in any way a groundbreaking Oscar contender. But it’s one of those films that’s so damn enjoyable. Richard Linklater has once again created a colorful piece of work that has perfectly developed characters as well as a feel good story that is all sewn together as smooth as strings on a sock.

“Last Flag Flying” has an incredible cast that includes Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne, who together work with the screenplay in such a collaborative fashion that it creates the best friendship. That friendship is truly what makes this movie so humorous and heartwarming. It dives into both the pains and good memories of pre war and post war that somehow still manages to honor veterans in the most sincere way possible. I of course wouldn’t consider it a war film, but these are the kind of films about war I want to see more of. We don’t need any more war films that are simply love letters to the USA. We need war films that dive Into deeper meanings on what being a soldier is all about.

Again, it’s not brilliant. It’s at times slow and hard to like the characters, but man is it enjoyable and so damn funny. Plus, it’s just a story that’ll make anyone feel good when they leave the theater. That’s what makes Linklater such a genius director.
