Edgar Wright you one goddamn badass mother….THIS FILM IS SO GOOD. Like, I got out of the theatre about an hour ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it.
“Baby Driver” is so magnificent on every corner of filmmaking it’s not even funny. The cast, which includes greats like Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, and most importantly Ansel Elgort, are all so phenomenal. But that’s really the only singular thing I can say about this that is separate from the mind of Edgar Wright.
Wright has always been a hit or miss with me. His direction and writing style is so funny, serious, yet oddball all at the same time but it doesn’t work with all of his ideas. It worked with Shaun of the Dead, didn’t do too much for me on The World’s End, and it fit like a charm in Scott Pilgrim. But this heist film is the most perfect kind of film to fit his directing style into. It could’ve worked so well with “Ant Man” if he was given the chance, that’s for sure. But “Baby Driver” will suffice.
The story is so simple, yet so original (with such amazing writing) that I could go as far as even saying it doesn’t remind me of any film. This is a kind of story I just cherish because it hasn’t been done before. Someone could easily say Fast and Furious, but then I would give that person the middle finger. Because unlike Fast and Furious, almost all the car stunts and spectacle you see on screen is 100% real. There’s no CGI, and you can feel the excitement and thrill of every action sequence with the feel of the camera and the smoke from the tires wrecking the ground at every second. These sequences are made even better when you add in the almighty soundtrack that accompanies the entire movie.
This is the kind of movie I want to see more of. I ask you all to please go see it. We don’t need another Jumanji or another Disney remake or another stupid action boner film like Transformers. We need more of this. The kind of popcorn entertainment that is fun, yet so well done. You don’t see a “Deadpool”-esque film like this any day of the week. Trust me, you will feel the laughs, the thrills, and the drama pumping throughout your heart. You truly are in for an incredible ride. One of the best films of this year easily. Okay, I’m done rambling. JUST SEE IT.
