“Lion” is a great moving film that also manages to break your heart just like “A Monster Calls”. And just like that movie, it’s not necessarily meant to be Oscar gold as much as it is just to enjoy an incredible true story.
The editing was a bit of a turn off for me, and there were some scenes both relating to the backstory and the romances that could’ve been cut, but the writing, the music, and the acting by Dev Patel is on full point. “Lion” did such an excellent job at taking a true story, and making us, the audience, feel more connected to it and care for not just the story, but for the dire situations happening with children across the country. So many times, we can get wrapped up in a true story just because the plot is amazing even though everything else around it sucks. Thankfully, Garth Davis, the director, was self aware of how to make a true story sound even better without feeling too gimmicky.
Looking at the whole picture, a terrific job elevating a true story and the themes and situations behind it. Be prepared to cry a bit as the last 30 minutes are such a roller coaster ride of emotions.
