"A Monster Calls" Review - The Beauty of the Beast

“A Monster Calls” is one serious trip, both in emotion and in imagination.

The writing and the story overall is not so much Oscar gold as it’s more a feel good story you can re-watch over and over again. It’s extremely sad, and the powerful acting by Lewis Macdougall, Sigourney Weaver, and Felicity Jones helps with all that heartbreak you’ll be feeling. Liam Neeson’s deep and soothing fits like a glove for the voice of the Groot ripoff (credit for that joke goes to my brother).

This movie is successful in it’s own right because of the feel good/heartbreaking original story and the visual effects/animation. The animation in the stories the characters tell are just plain visionary and are very reminiscent of another amazing animated film this year, "The Little Prince". These two elements play hand and hand with each other an as a result, will probably make you cry more than it should.

The only thing that really angered me was the ending. Without spoiling anything, just imagine if there was an extra scene after the ending of E.T. That’s how unneccesary it was. The film was so beautiful and so sweet until the last 5 minutes when it decided to add a completely random ending.

Other than that, “A Monster Calls” is an experience worth taking. The beauty of the effects will move you, the monster will haunt you, and the story will move you and break your heart. If you can take a film with a 50 foot monster that seriously and cry along with it, that’s a pretty successful pice of art in my view.
