"Patriots Day" Review- No Review Really

Why no review? Because I walked out of the theatre. For the first time, I actually walked out of a theatre because I hated a movie that much. Not only is Patriots Day disappointing, but it just angers me.

There were some great moments depicting the Boston bombings, and Mark Wahlberg had some wonderful acting moments, but the 2nd biggest problem is that there are way too many storylines. Every 5 minutes, it switches to a different person’s point of view, and it gets extremely irritating an it throws the whole movie out of balance in terms of what we should focus on.

Here’s my biggest problem with it though. And that’s the glorifying of the bombers. They actually have two actors playing the bombers, and the movie tries so hard to have you actually connect with these two boys. They try to make you feel like they are people. The problem is, they’re not people, they are terrorist scum. My brother witnessed the attacks first hand so this terrible event has a special place in my family. Seeing this movie trying to make you be sympathetic towards them is so forced and not necessary. The producers could’ve made a great movie without showing their faces. The other added problem with having these characters be big parts in the movie is that they turn it into an action thriller. At one point, you’re watching a heartfelt drama about the survivors and the heroes of the Boston Bombings, and the next, you feel like you’re watching a heist film.

I’m so disappointed right now, because I loved the Berg/Wahlberg collaboration on Deepwater Horizon, and I thought Mark Wahlberg, as a true Bostonian, could do this movie justice, but unfortunately, they didn’t. It could’ve been great. It really could’ve. Maybe it’s just too soon, but I saw potential in this film no matter how soon it was to everyone else. It started off as such an honor to the victims of Boston, but became such a silly and unbalanced film that it morphed into a dishonor. Maybe some events are meant to be untouched.

Two Nebs Down!
