Unfortunately, “Jackie” was such of a disappointment. The director and the rest of the crew definitely had good intentions, but all the directoral decisions fell pretty flat in my opinion.
The film doesn’t really have any consistency. It wants to be a biopic, but also wants to be a flashback kind of story. It wants to be a serious drama that scars you, but also makes you want to question the legitimacy of this history. They tell the story in so many different ways that it kind of gets boring after a while, especially with the similar camera shots, the non-serious score, and slow pace. “Jackie” has no consistent tone and as a whole, the movie was just all over the place for me to be focused upon. Maybe the story of Jackie Kennedy was meant to be a TV series, maybe it was just not meant to be told in movie form at all. But even at an hour and 40 minutes, it failed to grasp my attention at all and impress me.
The only redeeming thing about this film is the electric and haunting performance by Natalie Portman. Time and time again, she proves to be one of the best actresses in this business. But other than her, I really don’t think this is worth seeing. Truly a beautiful film, but not done enough justice in my opinion.
