"Moonlight" Review- Light Shines on a Small Voice

“Moonlight” is a real and interesting film of it’s kind. The topics it tackles have never been dealt with before so seriously. The main focus throughout the film is African american homosexuality. It’s one of those few movies that doesn’t use a mainly African American cast as a stereotype or for slavery purposes. This cast is used to show people as beloved human beings and the “two roads diverged in the yellow wood” decisions we make throughout life.

The movie is divided into 3 acts that each show the main character, Chiron, in a time of his life where he was struggling and/or how he grew as he got older. It’s a slow churn movie, and it can get boring sometimes, and the cinematography can get very lousy at points (cinematography rarely annoys me, but the camera was out of focus so many times). But at the end of the day, the beauty of the writing and the performances bring out the meaning of love in such a passionate way that hasn’t been done before in a long time.

A well composed and smooth film that will defiantly get some Oscar love. It may have it’s technical faults here and there, but this movie is still pretty great.

One Nebs Up!
