"Love and Mercy" is truly one of my favorite musical biopics ever. Maybe even one of the best biopics of all time. For those unfamiliar, this is a film about singer/songwriter Brian Wilson (Beach Boys). This movie is not so much about the group as it is about the musical genius behind it. The story shows two parts of Wilson's life: the life where he is on top of the world with his unique music, and the other where he is living an unsure and schizophrenic life. This kind of past/present story has been done before, but what L&M does so perfect is make the scenes with the Beach Boys feel like you are backstage with them watching and feeling everything they do. This is done by filming those specific scenes in a documentary style fashion, and making the colors pop out right at you and make you feel like you are truly in the 60s. That, and the superb acting by Paul Dano and John Cusack make you forget that you are watching two different people. The writing is flawless, and the imagery and the unique style of filmmaking put this movie truly as one of the most memorable and effortless biopics ever made.
Putting my inner film nerd aside, people really need to know more about the Beach Boys. I have been a huge fan of them for a long time because their sound, harmonies, and lyrics are spectacular and all out addicting. Plus, Brian Wilson's artistic mind paved the way for some of the best rock and roll out there today, even for the Beatles! If you're a film geek, a Beach Boys fan, a rock and roll fan, or a plain music fan, PLEASE GO SEE THIS MOVIE.
