"Selma" was not the film I expected it to be. And it's hard to judge it as a film geek.
First, I have to say I never like comparing movies to other movies. Like when someone says The Hobbit trilogy is terrible simply because it's not as good as TLOTR trilogy? I don't want to be that guy. However, I cherished "12 Years A Slave" so badly because it did such a great job at developing a story about an incredible man who conquered slavery while also dealing with racism. So it was pretty tough to not get caught up in the inspiring story about how far we have come in civil rights.
Is "Selma" as good as 12 Years? Not by a thousand miles unfortunately. Is it a great film? Absolutely. The main problem is that it's very slow, but when the important parts come, they are shot and edited so perfectly, it's almost tearful to watch. It's got "Les Miz" like battle scenes, has a speed as slow as a sloth, but has the same kind of bold passion and charisma as the movie "Lincoln". David Oyelowo also rises to the occasion as he transforms into MLK in such a strong form it's just purely spectacular. The completion for best actor in a movie is going to be the biggest Oscar competition in the world. But "Selma" is truly a great piece of cinematic work.
Whether you are a film nerd or not, tough out the slow pace and go see this film. It is so important for everyone to watch, especially in this crazy post-racial society w live in today.
